Goodnight, Moon; farewell, Neil Armstrong; goodbye dream – Oliphant, and Tyson

Two thoughts:

Pat Oliphant cartoon, on death of Neil Armstrong, and dreams to go to the Moon

Pat Oliphant cartoon, upon the death of Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on the Moon.

And this one, with Neil de Grasse Tyson, “We stopped dreaming”:

Oliphant’s cartoon shows a future under Mitt Romney and continued GOP domination of the House and Senate — no more Neil Armstrongs doing peaceful work for NASA, like going to the Moon.  Tyson expresses hope for something different.

No, it’s not “time to come inside, Grampaw.”  It’s time to vote.  Vote for the guys whose budget doesn’t say “America cannot afford to be great anymore, American cannot afford to dream.”

Ha!  A third thought:

    To quote the child:
On a visit to Egypt, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden tells Al Jazeera television that “perhaps foremost” of the three tasks Obama charged him with as head of America’s space program is “to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with pre-dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.”

What? You and your fellow Republicans are going to try banning Algebra and the number zero?

Is there no subject on which you are not ill-informed, mis-informed, or completely ignorant?

You can see Dr. Bolden’s interview, and get the facts before embarrassing anyone, here: https://timpanogos.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/power-line-on-nasa-and-islam-when-you-start-believing-your-own-fictions-youre-in-trouble/

And why shouldn’t we reach out to Islamic nations? Perhaps you don’t bother to look at stars, but when you get your eyes out of the total dark and look up to the skies again, ponder why it is that we have a star named Aldeberan, or Beteguese, or Deneb. And what a great understanding of human psychology, cultures, history and science Obama demonstrates when he tells the NASA Director to reach out to help Arabs take pride in their intellectual accomplishments and heritage, again — instead of making useless and destructive war!

There’s a story about a joke that got passed around a couple of years ago. The story is that a guy told this joke to a group of Republicans at at platform committee hearing at a state convention: ‘Did you hear about the arrest at the airport in Houston last night? Yeah, there was a math teacher headed to the NEA convention in Dallas, and they caught her carrying a compass, a protractor, and a metal straight edge. They said they think she’s a member of a terrorist organization called “Al Gibra,” and they’re charging her with carrying instruments of math instruction.’ At that point no one on the platform committee cracked a smile, but instead passed an education plank railing against critical thinking and math instruction, and calling for an end to geography instruction, too.

I thought it was an apocryphal story to poke fun at Texas Republicans, but hearing you rant about Bolden, I wonder: Were you a member of that platform committee?

Yes , no country for old men. The cartoon is about cultural decay , of the dumbing down of successive generations .

Hard to believe, but true. Shocking, but not surprising. On a visit to Egypt, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden tells Al Jazeera television that “perhaps foremost” of the three tasks Obama charged him with as head of America’s space program is “to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with pre-dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.” Bolden’s other two tasks are to “re-inspire children to want to get into science and math” and “expand our international relationships.” Evidently space travel and space exploration are not among the three tasks of the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Neil Armstrong fronted Congress a year ago with a similar complaint , that the USA is allowing its lead in space be squandered……’dare to dream’ from the mouth of Obama is worth less than a pocketful of mumbles from a shyster used car salesman. James K lamented how the Republicans have retreated from Goldwater, how about the Democrats from Kennedy…..

America is in decline and Obama isnt the answer …Romney is no better….me need a drink.

Kids are so used to stuff like that today…for better or for worse. I have grandchildren who grew up watching every lift off at the Cape because that’s where they lived. Not so special to them.

I still remember the thrill. I hope we will still dream and follow our dreams. And, I still have hopes for those flying cars…
