Few weeks go by that some student doesn’t ask me about the Mayan calendar and its “ending” in 2012.
I suggest that students keep a chart of predictions of the end of the Earth, or other psychics’ predictions, and see how accurate they are.
And tommorrow, September 21, students tracking such things should get an eye-opener one way or another.
Here’s a site that predicts the beginning of the end for September 21, 2009. It’s an odd, unholy amalgam of Mayan woo, Nostradamus, pagan woo and Christian hoo-haw.
Be sure to check back Tuesday morning.
P. Z. Myers at Pharyngula dug up the site. More discussion there — much of it deliciously rude.

The end of the world is always in the future until it has passed. Then those predictions were wrong and new predictions take their place.
I, on the other hand, have actually calculated that the world will end the day before I win the lottery. How so, you ask. Well, it is a secret and all I can tell you is that too much knowledge about the future will change it. A strong possibility exists that the world may actually end after I win the lottery if I disclose my algorithm.
So rather than focusing your efforts on when the world will end, you should focus on when I will win the lottery. I know that I will…

Nostradamus famously predicted the end of the world in 1996. Consequently, he did not predict an attack in a nation he’d never heard of, five years later. You can read about the hoax prediction here:

Apparently the Mayas predicted Hitler and Napoleon. Apparently Nostradamus predicted 9/11. And apparently David Koresh is the second coming of Christ.
The Maya calendar merely states that December 2012 is the beginning of a new era in the world, not that it’ll end. Well worth an OTT movie; not worth anywhere near the rabid hysteria being whipped up on the good ol’ net.

Maybe their running nude through the fields prevented the catastrophe!
I think it’s worth a try again, don’t you? C’mon, Europeans, do what you can to save the planet!

I remember reading that many Europeans living around the year 1000 thought the world would end then. In Germany, some folks took to running nude through the fields and towns. I don’t recall what running around nude had to do with the end of the world, but that’s what some people did in anticipation of the end.
