November 11 is Veterans Day, a U.S. federal holiday dedicated to honoring veterans who served honorably in war or peacetime.

I am a gay Vietnam veteran who served honorably in the USAF. I have worked for repeal of DADT for several years. It is so very disheartening that even though the president, the Democratic Congress, the Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Mullen, and now (according to the leaked results of the DOD survey of military members and their families) 70% of the US military and military families accept gays and lesbians serving openly, it seems that the right wing religious fanatics in the US aligned with conservatives such as John McCain and the new head of the Marine Corps (who, by the way, needs to follow orders from the Commander in Chief and the Secretary of Defense on this issue when this changes – and it will) are doing everything in their power to stop this change. If this is not changed by the end of this year, the new Republican House will block it and who knows when the forces of Progressivism will prevail. This has already passed in the House. The Senate needs to pass it this year. I am old. I had hoped that this would happen in my lifetime. I served with gays and lesbians (several of my USAF supervisors were gay women – strong and competent and great role models to me as a young Airman – I learned to be professional and learned so many other things from them, as well as from my straigt and gay male & female colleagues and supervisors). I served at NATO HDQT’s with not so closeted gay military members from Belgium and Holland and England (and some Americans) – this was in the late ’60’s. Ironically, this was way before DADT was implemented. This was toward the end of the draft and at the beginning of the gay rights movement (Stonewall, 1969). There were vibrant and joyful gay communities outside of two major USAF bases/Navy bases where I served in the ’60’6 and ’70’s.
We must do everything to allow competent and professional gays and lesbians to serve openly in the US military. Please contact your senators and the Speaker of the House to urge them to do so this year.
