Who does God prefer? Kind atheists?

Actual photo, from the Rose City Park United Methodist Church, in Portland, Oregon.

Rose City Park United Methodist Church sign, "God prefers atheists . . ."

The sign got a mention in Larry Bingham’s column in The Oregonian, and he says it’s making more headlines.

The Rose City Park United Methodist Church minister’s recent sign, which says “God Prefers Kind Atheists over Hateful Christians” is making headlines all over the place.

My colleague, Religion Writer Nancy Haught, cites it in her story on the shifting terminology between “religion” and “Christian.” And The Christian Post also has a story.

  1. Kindness and hate come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and religions. If you are a Christian and believe that God created all of us in HIS likeness, than you need to accept the many differences within his creations. Remember, we are all children of God and there are no favorites.

Reblogged this on Under The LobsterScope and commented:
As a “Kind Atheist” being preferred by any God is a gift I do not require, nor would I open it if received.
However, “Hateful Christians” are in the same category to me as “Hateful Muslims” or “Hateful Jews” or even “Hateful Atheists.” Being hateful is one of the reasons this whole world has been steadily going to pot.

Nice one – “your” God, as if *He* belongs to you in some way.

And they wonder why there are atheists who say that God was made up.

And talk about “free will” being an illusion? You say God doesn’t have free will, that if Hitler, or Stalin, or Dahmer “came to him” God would be like “hey, well, that was just what you did on Earth, no worries”.

Who is the sick one here? Do *you* really believe that *you* define God, and that is somehow Christian? Because that is at best Deist.

  4. Well, Ill give you an example, Robert.

Do you really want to say that God likes what Bradlee Dean has said? After all, he has said that the United States should do what certain Muslim countries do..that being rounding up homosexuals and executing them.

Do you think God appreciates the Westboro Baptist church who seem bent on showing up at the funerals of our soldiers and yelling that “God hates fags!”?

It’s really not that hard to figure out what God and Jesus like. After all, it was Jesus who said “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And also Jesus said in Matthew 25: 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

Oh and this one is just my personal opinion but somehow I doubt God and Jesus appreciate being turned into political props and prostitutes by certain members of the Republican party. And somehow I doubt Jesus or God would like Paul Ryan’s worship of Ayn Rand with his little proposed budget.

So as for your vomit..spare that for those who really deserve to be vomitted over…those Christians who simply can’t actually stop using their faith as a weapon to justify their intolerance, hatred, fear and violence.

And somehow I doubt God likes those who lie or preach intolerance, fear, hatred and violence in His name.

If you disagree then..well….that’s because you refuse to grant God the morality and the mercy and the justice you claim He operates from.

  5. Okay. I’ve tried not to get on here and “vomit” lately, but we are talking about my God here. Just for the record God does not “prefer kind Atheists”, or “hateful Christians”. We are dealing with very subjective terms here in kind and hateful. God will save anyone who comes to Him, and “is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance”. I will not speculate to exactly what is meant by the terms kind and hateful, but I can imagine what is intended. Folks, God loves all of us. He is, however, a God of justice, mercy, wrath, holiness, and most important to us, a God of grace. Jesus died for all. What you do with Him is your choice. What you cannot do is make Him what you want Him to be.
