Okay, I’m giving up trying to figure out the Republican race, and Republicans.
Once upon a time you could count on getting the ear of Republicans with a wave of the U.S. flag, a reference to patriotism, and an appeal to time-honored values, like telling the truth.
But no more.
In the last round of the Debate-That-Never-Ends, Mitt Romney in essence called Rick Perry a liar. Romney even offered to give Perry $10,000 if Perry could prove the smear he’d just made on Romney.
Perry, knowing he’d been caught red-handed in a lie, refused to take the offer.
So what happened? The political line is that Romney is “out of touch” for making it a $10,000 offer.
For free, Romney showed Perry to be a liar. And Romney gets the heat?
Just to confuse things further, Republicans aren’t voting for Perry, either.
Literacy test, hell. We need a sanity test for these guys — the Republican voters included. Republicans are close to reason only in the dictionary, and even there they are not on the same page.

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Noting a “rising sense of frustration” at the worldwide economic recession, Pope Benedict XVI said that a more just and peaceful world requires “adequate mechanisms for the redistribution of wealth.”
The pope’s words appeared in his message for the World Day of Peace 2012, released on Friday (Dec. 16) at the Vatican.
The message laments that “some currents of modern culture, built upon rationalist and individualist economic principles, have cut off the concept of justice from its transcendent roots, detaching it from charity and solidarity.”
Authentic education, Benedict writes, teaches the proper use of freedom with “respect for oneself and others, including those whose way of being and living differs greatly from one’s own.”
Peace-making requires education not only in the values of compassion and solidarity, but in the importance of wealth redistribution, the “promotion of growth, cooperation for development and conflict resolution,” Benedict writes.
The pope also calls on political leaders to “ensure that no one is ever denied access to education.”
The message was presented on Friday by officials of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace. The same body published a controversial document in October blaming the world’s economic and financial crisis on an “economic liberalism that spurns rules and controls,” and calling for global regulation of the financial industry and the international money supply.

Bruce, Politifact rates Perry’s claim as mostly false. Interesting discussion on NPR’s Saturday Edition this morning. (Great report pointing out that Michelle Bachmann’s claim that Politifact found her charges “true” were, instead, “pants on fire” ratings . . .) “If you look at the book, it does not say what Perry says it says.”
Up is down in the Republican world, really. Perry gets caught prevaricating, and Romney takes the heat for pointing it out.
Both of them are Eagle Scouts, but only one of them demonstrated it during that exchange.

It’s funny how offering to make a $10,000 bet got spun as showing Romney’s out of touch.
How many people have said (mostly to make a point): I’ll bet you $1,000,000 that …
Seems like a common use of language to me. If he’d said $1,000,000 would it have been less of a big deal???

For a collection of loudly self proclaimed Christians the Republican prospects for the Presidency seem ill-acquainted with the truth – such a good advertisement for the Tea Party and their respective churches. To take another example, they seem woefully ignorant of Christ’s requirement to love thy neighbour as thyself.

The Republican Party faithful knew Perry was a liar from the word go. Calling him out as a liar is the sin with these people.
They all know that any semi-realistic extrapolation of their policy positions or examination of the Republican party’s record of governance shows that they are complete failures. They know that the four chambers of Republicans heart are racism, greed, bigotry and fear. Their basic policy positions are throwing people out of work, (lower taxes) kicking the poor and the elderly to the curb, (entitlement reform) and pollution (anti-regulation).
So the last thing they want is an honest candidate for the presidency.

Granting for the moment that all your “just like” paragraphs are accurate generalizations and stand up, and granting the premise that this is a primarily Republican attack against Romney (for which the link I included poses obvious problems, but let’s skip past that)…
You’ve been around Ed’s blog for awhile by now. You do realize the ideological slanting here is already predominantly anti-conservative and anti-Republican, I’m sure…are you practicing your propaganda skills? Or are you paid some nickels & dimes for every website you put that on?
You’ve been doing this a whole lotta times, and at this point I just have to come out and ask you. It’s kinda creepy.

Ed, you have to understand that Republicans have devolved into a cult mentality.
Anything they don’t like is either part of some grand conspiracy or is simply a lie or wrong even if God came down here and told them otherwise Himself.
They don’t like Mitt so anything Mitt does will always backfire on him.
Just like no matter what they think evolution, the big bang theory, global warming or anything else science says that shatters their narrow world view is nothing more then some grand conspiracy against them.
Just like if non-Christians like to celebrate their holy days that occur at this time of the year and demand the same level of respect we Christians get they pronounce it as a war on Christmas. Because only a cult would think the phrase “Happy Holidays” is somehow not including Christmas and therefor is being disrespectful to it. Only a cult would think they have the right to say Merry Christmas all they want but others are required by some phantom law to say it and never say anything else.
Just like if gays ask for the same rights we heterosexuals have the Republican cult will react as if the gays are asking for “special” rights.
Just like they’ll throw a hissy fit at a TV show showing *gasp* Muslims in a positive light instead of just as terrorists.
Just like the President can propose ideas that are historically Republican ideas and the Republican cult will trip over itself objecting to those ideas just because the President said them.
Just like how the Tea partiers that were protesting two years ago are “true patriots” but the OWS protestors are nothing more then “dirty hippies” and purveyors of “class warfare.” Just like the Tea partiers can march carrying assault rifles and other weapons and show up at Democrat events and disturb what’s going on and not being touched by the police but the second an OWS protestor so much as sits on the ground the Republican cult cheers that protestor getting his ass kicked and pepper sprayed by the police.
Just like so far they’ve cheered the death penalty, booed a serving US soldier because he’s gay, cheered the idea of stripping the child labor laws, and cheered letting the uninsured die.
Just like they’ll cheer the idea of the middle class paying more in taxes but boo the thought that the rich, who have seen their wealth skyrocket in recent years, should pay even one cent higher in taxes. Just like they’ll cheer Newt for his little idea that the rich should pay a 11% tax rate which is significantly lower then the rest of us pay.
Just like they’ll stick to “supply side economics” despite the fact that there is ample evidence that it’s a complete failure and is wrecking the country.
They are a cult…they are Nero fiddling while Rome burns.
