Sen. McCaskill gets Tweets


Sen. Claire McCaskill gets Tweets on the government shutdown, sometimes from people who appear unfamiliar with major concepts of civilized life.

The old hymn says,

Refrain
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,

Worse, or better if the Tweeter tries to live up to it, is verse three:

We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride.

Wow.

    The apostle James weighs in: “No one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison.With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.” Jas. 3:8b-12 NRSV

    Perhaps I have blinders on. But I have not observed such behavior from Christian leaders on the religious left or in the religious center. Think of Jim Wallis, James Forbes, Tony Campolo, Rachel Held-Evans, Shane Claiborne, etc. Maybe I have missed it. But I can’t recall any of them violating this ethic.

    Those leaders of the religious right who have are legion. Mark Driscoll, Pat Robert$on, Franklin Graham, Glenn Beck, David Barton, James Dobson, Bryan Fischer, John Hagee — lots more. Whatever genuinely intended words of praise for God come from their lips are tainted with the ugliness with which they refer to their liberal brothers and sister.

    I do concede that some liberals (and I have sadly been guilty of this myself) use hateful invective in the past. St. James is right. This ought not to be. And I am committed to changing that. It’s not intended as an excuse but it does help to observe (and this would be true, Ed, of those on the right as well) that leaders who seek the spotlight and the soapbox are held to an even higher standard that rank and file. So the nasty Christians who said what they did in the tweets aren’t quite as troubling to me as the spiritual guides who have formed them. But again — left or right — no excuses.

    So how do we control our tongues, we Christians? James offers this counsel:

    “Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for* those who make peace.” vv. 13-18

    In other words, we need to be peacemakers. That doesn’t mean compromising. It means keeping the main thing, the main thing. Pray for me as I look to behave more decorously in debating the issues of the day. I know I need to.

    Surely he’s fibbing about his faith. What pastor wouldn’t counsel against such language, and views?
